Introduction to Marius Fabre - Makers of Traditional Marseille Soap Since 1900

Entrance to the Savonnerie Marius Fabre in Salon de Provence Marius Fabre is as emblematic of the country's southern Provence region as lavender fields and cicadas, and their all-natural and sustainable olive oil-based Marseille soap products are suitable for a host of daily uses. Palm oil free, the 100% vegetable-based natural biodegradable Marseille soaps  are environmentally friendly, and the packaging is entirely recyclable.  Some of the range is also Ecocert* certified and organic.

Based in Salon de Provence, Savonnerie Marius Fabre makes traditional Marseille soap that can be used on the body, as well as being a highly effective cleaning product for laundry and all around the home. The soap contains no colourings, no synthetic additives, no petroleum-based products and no animal fats, unlike most other soaps, shower gels and shampoos on the market.

The traditional Marseille soap manufacturing process is a guarantee of "extra pure" soap, which is entirely free of impurities. It is gentle on all types of skin, even the most sensitive.

The Fabre family have been making the traditional Marseille soap since 1900, and the company today is run by Marius Fabre's great-grandaughters, Julie and Marie Bousquet-Fabre, who continue the artisan tradition of Marseille soap-making.   The company has prestigious EPV  status, which means it recognised in France as a "living heritage" company.

Made from vegetable oils (no palm oil), Marius Fabre Marseille soap is biodegradable, phosphate free and additive free, it does not pollute rivers and so helps protect the environment. It requires very little packaging and lasts a long time, especially when allowed to dry out, so is very durable and makes for a quality yet thrifty purchase.

Marius Fabre genuine Marseille soap is manufactured according to three essential criteria, as defined by the Union des Professionnels du Savon de Marseille (UPSM), the Marseille soap-makers alliance, of which Marius Fabre is one of the 4 founding members:

1. Composition - Made 100% from vegetable oils, no added fragrance, no colouring, no preservatives
2. Manufacturing Process - The "Marseille Process", where the soap is cooked in cauldrons for approximately 10 days and goes through 5 specific stages of manufacturing
3. Geographical Origin - Made in the historic Marseille soap-making area: the Marseille region, which nowadays corresponds to the Bouches-du-Rhone department.

There are just 4 savonneries who still make traditional Marseille soap - Fer a Cheval, Marius Fabre, Savonnerie du Midi and Le Serail.

Marius Fabre’s range includes traditional Marseille soap, scented soaps, liquid soaps, soap flakes, a beautiful range of accessories and black soap, which is a miracle product that cleans anything, including your own body, clothes, dogs, BBQs, cars and even the kitchen floor!
